Labor Day holiday starts early for Colorado DUI enforcement

The Labor Day DUI crackdown — which traditionally brings a close to the state’s “100 Days of Heat” campaign — kicks off Friday August 17, two weeks ahead of the actual holiday weekend. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and increased enforcement across Colorado from that date through September 4.

The goal of the stepped-up enforcement is to stem the tide of DUI-related fatalities and crashes.  During last year’s 100 Days of Heat summer enforcement, more than 2,634 people were arrested for DUI in Colorado. Sadly, however, 67 people were killed in alcohol-related traffic accidents between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend 2011.

At least two counties are planning to hold DUI checkpoints over the next two weeks.  The Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol will be staging a checkpoint between 7 p.m. August 24 and 4 a.m. August 25 on Highway 119 in Gilpin County.  Larimer County officials are also planning checkpoints for August 18 and September 1, although they have not announced where these will be.

If you plan to drink, don’t get behind the wheel — arrange to have a designated driver or make plans for alternative transportation.  And even if you aren’t drinking, drive safely and remember to fasten your seatbelt.
