Increased DUI Checkpoints and Enforcement this Halloween
Because of the increased risk, many law enforcement agencies across the state of Colorado will be on either increased patrol or saturation patrol, or they will be manning traditional DUI checkpoints between the dates of Friday, October 26 and Saturday, November 3.
“Increased patrol” and “saturation patrol” mean that extra DUI enforcement officers will be on duty. On holidays like Halloween, the purpose of extra patrol officers is to aggressively pursue impaired drivers. A DUI checkpoint is a roadblock whereby law enforcement agents can stop vehicles to check drivers for sobriety. Checkpoints are set up in areas where DUIs are traditionally the most frequent, but random or “roving” DUI checkpoints are also a possibility this Halloween. In addition, there will be extra patrol cars out looking for impaired drivers in Denver and around all of Colorado.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, each year in Colorado more than 26,000 people are arrested for DUI and over 150 people are killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes. CDOT does not want you to become a statistic this Halloween. Halloween can be a blast, but not with a DUI. This is a holiday for adults as much as it is for kids. In fact, there are probably more adults than children who get into the spirit of Halloween. For kids, it’s all about candy. For adults, it’s all about hanging out with friends and attending parties. In many cases, Halloween parties involve alcohol, which often equates to increased incidences of drunk driving this time of year.
The scariest thing about driving on Halloween is that children are out on the streets trick-or-treating. When it’s dark and kids are dressed in costumes, it can be very difficult to see them. This Halloween, party responsibly and arrange for transportation to avoid a DUI or something worse.
