New Jersey Teenagers Arrested for Underage Drinking

Four New Jersey teens were arrested on suspicion of underage drinking after being found with alcohol in a parking lot. The Hasbrouck Heights Patch reports that the arrest occurred at the Hasbrouck Heights Swim Club parking lot. Officials say the four underclassmen were released to their parents after being brought to police headquarters.

According to New Jersey Code 2C:33-15: “Any person under the legal age to purchase alcoholic beverages who knowingly possesses without legal authority or who knowingly consumes any alcoholic beverage in any school, public conveyance, public place, or place of public assembly, or motor vehicle, is guilty of a disorderly persons offense, and shall be fined not less than $500.00.” Youths who are charged with underage drinking may also face a suspension or postponement of their driving privileges for a period of six months and mandatory participation in an alcohol education program.

There are additional penalties for any adult who sells alcohol to a minor or for an underage drunk driver. The family of a juvenile facing an alcohol-related charge would be well advised to take the situation seriously by contacting an experienced defense attorney. A knowledgeable attorney will have experience fighting wrongful charges, negotiating for lesser penalties, and getting juvenile criminal records sealed.
